UNIT 10: PLANET EARTH

Lesson 1: Getting started - In a science club

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Knowledge

- Use the words and phrases related to planet Earth, habitats, and flora and fauna;

- Gain vocabulary to talk about Planet Earth.

Vocabulary: Planet Earth; Habitats; Flora and fauna

Pronunciation: Rhythm in sentences

Grammar: Non-defining relative clauses

2. Competences

- Develop communication skills;

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork.

Digital Competences:

3.1.TC2a: Digital Content Creation: Students understand the concept of organizing information visually to conceptualize a simple infographic about protecting Earth's habitats.

2.3.TC2b: Digital Citizenship: Students demonstrate civic responsibility by discussing how to safely and positively participate in online communities to spread environmental awareness.

3. Personal qualities

- Actively participate in class;

- Develop self-study skills

II. MATERIALS

- Grade 9 textbook, Unit 10, Getting started; Computer connected to the Internet; Projector / TV; hoclieu.vn.

III. PROCEDURES

TEACHER’S AND STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

CONTENTS

1. ACTIVITY 1. WARM-UP (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To activate students’ knowledge on the topic of the unit;

- To lead into the unit.

b. Content:

- Think!

- Making a Solar System picture.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Students can have some ideas about Natural Wonders.

d. Organisation:

Digital Tool: Projector showing a dynamic visual slide.

Task delivering: The teacher sets a fun context on the projector: "Imagine characters like Nobita and Doraemon are traveling in a spaceship. Can you help them identify the planets they pass by?" The teacher divides the class into two teams and projects an interactive image of the Solar System without the names of the planets.

Scaffolding (Pre-task): To ensure weak students aren't left behind, the teacher asks: "Can anyone come up and point to the Sun on the screen first?"

Task performance: Students work in their teams. One representative from each team comes up to the teacher's computer to drag and drop the names of the planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) into the correct orbital positions.

Scaffolding (During task): If a student hesitates, the teacher prompts: (Average) "Which planet is next to Earth?" or (Good/Excellent) "Why do you think Earth is the only planet with living things on it?"

Report & discussion: The teams observe the screen. The teacher asks the class if they agree with the placements.

Judgement: The teacher stops the game, checks the answers using the digital answer key, and declares the winning team. The teacher leads into the lesson by asking: "Where is Earth in the Solar System?".

Name of the planets:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
