Lesson 2: A closer look 2

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Knowledge

- Use non-defining relative clauses.

Vocabulary: Planet Earth; Habitats; Flora and fauna

Pronunciation: Rhythm in sentences

Grammar: Non-defining relative clauses

2. Competences

- Develop communication skills;

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork.

Digital Competences

2.1.TC2b: Communication & Collaboration: Interact dynamically via a shared digital screen.

5.3.TC2a: Problem Solving: Use digital tools (drag-and-drop, text manipulation) to test grammar rules visually.

3.1.TC2a: Digital Content Creation: Draft descriptive texts for digital platforms (e.g., travel blogs).

III. PROCEDURES

TEACHER’S AND STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

CONTENTS

1. ACTIVITY 1- WARM-UP (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson;

- To lead Ss into the new unit.

b. Content:

- Quiz!

- Planet Earth Pictionary

c. Expected outcomes:

- Students can answer teacher’s questions using non-defining relative clauses.

d. Organisation:

2.1.TC2b: Collaborating via a shared digital screen.

Task delivering: The teacher divides the class into 2 teams. The teacher projects an image of a famous landmark or nature item (e.g., Mount Fansipan, a polar bear, the ocean) on the screen but only allows one student from Team A (the "Describer") to face the screen. The rest of Team A faces the back of the class.

Task performance: The Describer must describe the image for their team to guess, using clues like: "It is an animal... which lives in the ice." or "It is a mountain... which is the highest in Vietnam."

Scaffolding (During task): The teacher prompts the Describer if they get stuck: (Average) "Use the word 'which' to describe its color or size!"

Report & discussion: If the team guesses correctly, they get a point. Swap teams.

Judgement: The teacher congratulates the winning team and says: "You just naturally used 'which' and 'who'. Today, we will learn exactly how to use them to add 'extra flavor' to our sentences!"

Example:

Draw pictures of coral reefs and volcanic eruptions.

Sentences:

- It’s an area of coral, the top of which can sometimes be seen just above the sea.

- It’s a tall, sleeping mountain that is covered in green forests and dotted with fluffy white clouds. But sometimes, this mountain wakes up in a very dramatic way!
