Lesson 4: Speaking

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students are expected to achieve the following objectives:

1. Knowledge:

- Vocabulary: Understand how to express opinions; I think, I believe, there are…..

- Pronunciation: Pronounce the following words, words clusters correctly: surgeons, assistants, firefighter, kindergarten, secretary..

- Grammar: - Apply useful expressions to talk about career choices.

2. Competencies:

a. General competencies:

- Improve competencies: pairwork, critical thinking, interpersonal skill, problem-solving skill, self-study skill, creativeness and adaptability, colaboration

b. Specific competencies:

- Develop communication skills and creativity;

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work;

- Develop presentation skills.

3. Qualities:

- Understand more about their preference of career;

- Develop self-study skills.

4. Digital Competencies (NLS Integration):

· [5.2NC1a]: Evaluate needs and identify, select, and use digital tools (specifically online career quizzes).

· [1.1NC1a]: Determine information needs; find data, information, and content in digital environments (searching for job details).

· [2.4NC1a]: Use digital tools and technologies for collaborative processes (coordinating for the project).

WARM – UP (5’ – PW/GW):

Aims: - To get Ss interested in the topic

- To activate Ss’ knowledge of the lesson

[NLS Integration 5.2NC1a]: Students access the link using their personal devices (smartphones/tablets) or the teacher’s computer to assess their needs (career suitability) using a digital tool.

PERSONALITY QUIZ

* T lets Ss do a small personality quiz that reveals their suitable career based on their MBTI characteristics:

** Ss do the quiz individually for up to 4 minutes.

*** Ss discuss their results and whether they found a suitable career option.

**** T introduces the topic of the lesson: Career choices.

KNOWLEDGE FORMATION: (5’ – PW)

Activity 1: WORK IN PAIRS. DECIDE WHICH JOBS ARE TRADITIONALLY DONE BY MEN OR WOMEN. USE THE EXPRESSIONS GIVEN TO HELP YOU. (p.70)

Aim: to introduce more ideals for the main speaking task and gets Ss involved in the lesson.

- [NLS Integration 1.1NC1a]: If Ss encounter an unfamiliar job title (e.g., surgeon), T encourages them to use an image search engine (Google Images) to see visual representations and identify if the search results show gender bias (mostly men or mostly women).

* T asks Ss to read through the jobs and makes sure they know all the job titles. T introduces some useful expressions to discuss the jobs in the box.

** Ss work individually to decide which jobs are traditionally done by men or women and tick the corresponding columns.

*** Ss discuss in pairs and use the expressions given to express their opinions.

**** T checks answers with the class.

 

Task 1

Suggested answers:

- Traditionally male jobs: 1, 4, 5, 7

- Traditionally female jobs: 2, 3, 6, 8
