UNIT 12: LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS

Lesson 5: Skills 1

I. OBJECTIVES: * By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

+ Reading: Read for specific information about the possibility of life on other planets.

+ Speaking: Talk about the conditions needed for planets to support human life.

1. Knowledge:

+ Vocabulary: liquid (n); temperature (n); atmosphere (n); gravity (n); habitable (adj); promising (adj); trace (n).

+ Language: Reported speech (questions); Expressing uncertainty.

+ Pronunciation: Intonation for making lists

2. Competence:

a) General competencies:

- Develop communication skills and creativity.

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork.

- Actively join in class activities.

b) Specific competencies:

- Group work and independent working, pair work, linguistic competence, cooperative learning and communicative competence.

c) Digital Competence:

3.1.TC2a (Problem Identification): Interact with the digital textbook (Hoclieu.vn) to highlight keywords, display text interactively, and check comprehension.

5.4.TC2a (Content Creation & Idea Sharing): Participate in a digital brainstorm via a shared screen to collect speaking ideas.

3. Qualities: - Be benevolent and responsible. Develop knowledge about other planets. Be ready to express uncertainty. Be interested more about the planets. Ss have the good attitude to working in groups, individual work, pair work, cooperative learning.

II. PREPARATIONS

Students: Text books, pencils, pics, blank papers, realia,….

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP (5’-IW, PW)

a. Objectives:

- To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson

- To lead into the new unit.

b. Content: - Discuss about other planets

c. Product: - Ss can describe another planet.

d. Implementation: Teacher’s instruction

TEACHER’S AND STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

CONTENTS

Task 1: Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions.

· 3.1.TC2a: Displaying vivid, contrasting digital imagery to spark discussion.

· Task Delivering: Teacher's Language: "Welcome back to the Space Command, explorers! Look at the projector. On the left is our beautiful green and blue Earth. On the right is a dry, rocky, red planet. Discuss with your partner: What do you know about other planets? Would you like to live on the red one? Why or why not?"

· Task Performance: Students discuss in pairs for 2 minutes. Walk around to provide vocabulary support.

Scaffolding Questions:

Weak: "Is the red planet hot or cold? Does it have trees?"

Good: "If you travel there, what must you bring in your backpack to survive?"

· Report & Discussion: Invite a few students to share their opinions. Write their keywords on the board (e.g., no water, cold, no air, aliens).

· Judgement: Teacher's Language: "Excellent predictions! You noticed that other planets don't have what we need. Let's read a scientific report to see exactly what a planet must have to keep us alive."

1: Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions. (Ex 1, P.130)
