UNIT 12: LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS

Lesson 1: Getting started

A Thrilling Science Fiction Novel

I. OBJECTIVES: * By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

- Gain an overview about the topic LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS

- Gain vocabulary to talk about LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS

1. Knowledge:

+ Vocabulary: alien (n); commander (n); creature (n); destroy (v); oppose (v); spaceship (n); thrilling (adj).

+ Language: Reported speech (questions); Expressing uncertainty.

+ Pronunciation: Intonation for making lists

2. Competence:

a) General competencies:

- Develop communication skills and creativity.

- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork.

- Actively join in class activities.

b) Specific competencies:

- Group work and independent working, pair work, linguistic competence, cooperative learning and communicative competence.

c) Digital Competence:

3.1.TC2a (Problem Identification): Identify and understand the context of the reading/listening tasks using the interactive digital textbook on Hoclieu.vn.

5.4.TC2a (Content Creation & Idea Sharing): Participate in a digital class poll and co-create a digital mind map via the teacher's screen/smartphone to share opinions.

3. Qualities: Love talking about Life on other planets. Promote planets in solar system. Develop knowledge about other planets. Ss have the good attitude to working in groups, individual work, pair work, cooperative learning.

II. PREPARATIONS

Teacher: Grade 8 textbook, laptop, TV, pictures and realia, Computer connected to the Internet. Phần mềm tương tác hoclieu.vn.

Students: Text books, pencils, pics, blank papers, realia,……

III. PROCEDURE

1. WARM-UP (5’-IW)

a. Objectives:

- To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson

- To lead into the new unit.

b. Content:

- Introduce about Life on Other Planets.

c. Product:

- Ss have general ideas about the topic “Life on Other Planets”.

d. Implementation: Teacher’s instruction

TEACHER’S AND STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

CONTENTS

3.1.TC2a: Using a digital screen to project visual and audio stimuli.

Task Delivery: Turn off some classroom lights. Project a beautiful, starry night sky image on the screen (ideally one that includes silhouettes of bamboo trees or village houses to make it relatable). Suddenly, play a short, static radio sound or a "beep-beep" UFO sound effect.

Teacher's Language: "Listen... What is that sound? Look at our village's night sky. Do you think someone is hiding up there?"

Task Performance: Students observe, listen, and let their imaginations run wild. Walk around and encourage them with scaffolding questions: "Are they friendly?", "Do they look like us?"

Report & Discussion: Invite 2-3 students to quickly share their thoughts. Encourage them to use simple English or Vietnamese (translate for them to build vocabulary).

Assessment: Conclude with excitement: "You have great imaginations! Today, Commander ABC will take you on a journey to find out if we are alone. Welcome to Unit 12!"

2. KNOWLEDGE FORMATION (15’-IW,PW)

a. Objectives:

- To introduce some vocabulary related to the topic.

- To introduce the topic of the unit, the vocabulary, the sounds, and the grammar points to be learnt.

b. Content:

- Vocabulary Study (alien, commander, creature, destroy, oppose, spaceship, thrilling)

c. Product:

- Ss know how to pronounce new words correctly and use them in appropriate situations.

d. Implementation: Teacher’s instruction
